ZOOL. Saumon d'eau douce que l'on trouve dans les lacs et rivières du Canada et qui ne descend jamais à la mer. Les saumons du lac Saint-Jean s'adaptèrent (...) s'amenuisèrent (...) se colorèrent de nuances vives (...) vert émeraude, de rose ardent, non plus saumons mais ouananiches (GENEVOIX, Routes avent., 1958, p.241).
Prononc.:[]. Étymol. et Hist. 1897 huananiche (A.-N. MONTPETIT, Les poissons d'eau douce, pp.493 et 501 ds Cahiers de l'office de la lang. fr., Canadianismes de bon aloi n° 4, 1969, p.22); 1905 ouananiche (E. ROUILLARD, Noms sauvages ds B. du Parler fr. au Canada, vol. 3, p.175). Mot d'une lang. amérindienne, le montagnais [langue du groupe algonquin], désignant le saumon d'eau douce. Le terme serait att. dès la 1re moitié du XVIIe s. dans un ouvrage du missionnaire jésuite, le père Masse d'apr. NED et l'angl. ouananiche «id.» en 1896, ibid.
